378 Great White Bear of the North
The polar bear, Ursus maritimus, is the largest land carnivore with males weighing in at 1100 to 1300 lbs. The largest on record weighed in at 1775 lbs. This male was photographed near Churchill, Manitoba. Polar bears congregate in this area in the fall waiting for ice to form on Hudson Bay so that they can begin hunting their main prey-the seal.
